About

The Northern Suburbs Law Association Inc. (NSLA Inc.) is one of Melbourne’s largest law associations, representing approximately 800 members who work, study and live in the northern suburbs.

NSLA Events

The association runs several events during the year including dinners and continued professional development seminars (CPD). We also support our members to participate in community-based legal services.

Regular bi-monthly dinners together with the AGM are held on a Wednesday evening at the Veneto Club in Bulleen.  A special combined Northern, Eastern and Southern Law Associations Christmas event is held at the end of the year.

Continued Professional Development (CPD)

Each of the dinners provides members with 2 CPD points in addition to a wonderful culinary experience and networking opportunities.

We pride ourselves on the variety and quality of guest speakers we secure for our seminars, covering issues around latest developments in the law as well as practical tips for running a law practice.

Aims of the Northern Suburbs Law Association

  1. To promote positive, professional and social relationships between local practitioners;
  2. To educate practitioners and keep them up to date on changes to legislation, policies and procedures through CPD presentations by qualified presenters;
  3. To introduce students and young lawyers to the legal profession and encourage their participation and development.

NSLA Young Lawyers Group

The NSLA has an active and innovative Young Lawyers Group. The aim of this group is to provide networking and mentoring opportunities to young professionals just starting out in their legal careers.

Students and young lawyers are welcomed and encouraged to attend our meetings and events.

The NSLA is also partnered with La Trobe University, Bundoora, in providing clinical placements to law students in their penultimate year of study.

A Note from the President

Before receiving notice of a meeting to be held in August of 2010, I was not aware of the existence of law associations.

Becoming a suburban practitioner and participating in the meetings has changed my understanding of the issues and problems faced by suburban lawyers. I have also become aware of the stresses and issues facing graduates, trainees and young lawyers.

Unfortunately, we have found that some suburban practitioners feel isolated, undervalued, and believe they lack the allure to draw young lawyers to their practices. We believe that the ongoing support of the NSLA helps to bridge the gap between the city practices and the suburban practices for all lawyers whether long standing or new to the profession.
