History

The Northern Suburbs Law Association (“NSLA”) was formed by the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) in the 1990’s.

In the late 1960’s, an association called BACCHUS (Brunswick and Coburg Confraternity Unassociated Solicitors) was formed by Maurice Brophy and Brian Flynn. BACCHUS held bi-monthly meetings open only to principals at that time. In the late 1990’s, Laurie Penttila became involved and the NSLA was formed with events, including meetings, being opened to all practitioners.

The current NSLA President, Antonella Terranova, became involved with the association in 2010 when she opened her own practice in the northern suburbs in that same year.  The NSLA became incorporated in 2016 and is now the NSLA Inc. It is supported by a vibrant Executive.

Since our inception, we have grown from strength to strength in member numbers and service delivery.

We have held 3 international conferences: Tuscany in 2013, Barcelona in 2015 and Prague in 2018. It has also held a local conference in the Yarra Valley in 2014, not to mention numerous Young Lawyer events over the years We also participate in a yearly conference in Queensland with the Southern Solicitor’s Group.

In 2018, the NSLA Inc. received an award at the 14th Victorian Legal Wards for “50 years of Continuance of Service”.

Today, the NSLA Inc. is an energetic, vibrant and vital association. We are constantly raising the profile of suburban practitioners, young lawyers and women in the profession and the great work they do.

Looking to the future, we seek to continuously find ways to be relevant and assist the community of legal practitioners and students and the wider community as a whole.
